Norfolk Harvest

Honey beer

Release date June 2015.

Brewed on: 29.3.2015 Bottled: April-June 2015.

The first of a pair of collaborations with Norfolk Brewhouse of Hindringham, Norfolk. It was David Holliday's suggestion to brew together that this was the pilot brew, done at the Poppyland Brewery, which was followed by a bigger brew for cask distribution at the Norfolk Brewhouse. It was slightly stronger, at 6%, and mostly put in bottles. The recipe was discussed for but then largely written by David and tweaked in discussion. It features as much as possible ingredients sourced from Norfolk. It is based on a Maris Otter barley that was grown at Church Farm at Heacham and then a small batch was pulled aside and floor malted by Crisps at Great Ryburgh. To this was added dried mint from ..., honey from ... and then coriander seed and Brazilian Curacao bitter orange peel. The hopping included East Kent Goldings and Northern Brewer.

The return match was at Norfolk Brewhouse at Hindringham with David and Rachel Holliday. It was a great day and a real eye opener brewing in a big brewhouse. I managed to lose a pair of spectacles while digging out the mash tun and only got them back after they had been spat out by a cow on the local farm where the spent grain goes!

Tasting notes

An intriguing combination flavours that come together surprisingly well in the final beer. The hops are well evident and the honey contributes flavour and aroma while mint lingers on the palate in the after taste. All together a well balanced beer that has received many plaudits from drinkers.

Free-from

This beer is produced without the use of any finings, filtering or pasteurisation, so all the flavours of the ingredients are preserved for your enjoyment. Also, it is gluten-free (tested <10ppm) for the benefit of those who suffer from gluten intolerance or who wish to reduce their gluten intake.

What the customers say

Campaign for Really Good Beer

"This one's a collaboration between Poppyland and The Norfolk Brewhouse and it's a good Pale Ale with a bunch of extra stuff thrown in. Brewed with locally grown floor malted Maris Otter barley, honey, mint, coriander and Curaçao peel, this is all far too easy to drink for its ABV. The malting is a fresh well baked crunchy biscuit coated in caramel and the honey adds a big round richness over which the mint and coriander work together to give a fresh spicy snap while the Laraha (if I recall, this is the correct name for the fruit used in Curaçao) peel adds a soft orangey backbone over which the hops are a green and leafy herbal hit. Poppyland Harvest beer you can swig in great big gulps until you realise your head feels wonky."
