Cley-next-the-Sea, Norfolk

Some of my earliest excursions to Norfok were to the East Bank at Cley with the Stevenage Ornithological Society. There I often met Richard Richardson the ornithologist and artist. He was a great imitator, not only of birds but of birdwatchers too and would lampoon people mercilessly behind their backs. As a teenager I camped for a few days on Walsey Hills with Kevin Baker, known later as Mike Baker I think and in adult life he worked for the BTO at Thetford. Richard came down to the East Bank most days dressed in leather jacket and jeans, riding a powerful motorcycle with his two Jack Russell terriers Gnat and Midge in the sidecar.
