Brief description Gansey pattern, a tesselated pattern devised and knitted by Esther Nurse of Lower Bodham about 1950; net mask columns with motifs of hoop nets (triangles of complex moss stitch with a bar across the top interpreted as symbolising the hoop nets formerly used for catching crabs)
Note This pattern was grossly mis-charted by Michael Harvey in Gladys Thompson (softback edition) and copied in several books without reference to the original for over 50 years until I published the correct chart (below) on 17.8.2019.
Note The original gansey contains an error in the sixth diamond from the bottom (on the side with one hole in it). A plain row has been inserted where it should not be. The effect is to raise the damond meshes by one row with respect to the hoop nets from then on upwards. This was at first interpreted as an 'improvement', as it evens up the spacing between the east-west points of the diamonds and the bars on the top of the hoop nets. However, once it was known that this adjustment was not extended to the other side of the gansey it was thought to simply be an error. It is doubtful if this has ever been noticed by anyone.

Note3 Fisherman's gansey in typical; pattern worn by fishermen at Sheringham. This was knitted by Mrs Esther Nurse of Lower Bodham (a Sheringham lady) about 1950. It was knitted in Patons 4-ply Behive fingering at a tension of 12 stitches and 20 rows to the inch. It took about ten to twleve weeks to knit. Her father actually died wearing a gansey like this, it having to be cut off him as the gansey fitted like a glove. Five needles were used in the making size 15 to 16.
